EuroBasket 2011 in Lithuania

The 2011 European Basketball Championship known as EuroBasket 2011, will be the 37th championship held by FIBA Europe and it will be hosted by Lithuania. For this occasion, Marijonas Mikutavičius with Mantas Jankavičius wrote and recorded a song. This will be the second time Lithuania has hosted Eurobasket, and the first since the restoration of its independence in 1990. Lithuania originally hosted the 1939 European Basketball Championship. The top two teams are guaranteed to play at the 2012 Summer Olympics

 

In memoriam Jonas Valiulis (1924-2011)

Jonas Valiulis died on October 23, 2011, at the age of 87 in Montreal.  He leaves his wife Helen, son John (Natalia) daughter Valerie (Guy). John and his wife lived in Ottawa for many years before returning to Montreal.

 

Kličienė Honoured for Dedication to Chapter

During the independence commemoration held on February 19th, long-time president of the chapter Ruta Klicius is thanked and presented with a graphic print by Dalia Genovaite Mazeikyte From left: Laima Laffitte, Algis Kuzmickas, film-maker from Lithuania, Lina Masionienė, Vidmantas Valiušaitis, commentator and publicist from Lithuania, Ambasador Gintė Damušytė, Rūta Kličienė, Vytas Radžius, Loreta Gudynaitė-Savtich, Raimundas Kličius and Virginija Ruškienė.

2011 Festive Trees Contest

For the second year, the Museum of Civilization is hosting the Festive Tree contest from November 29, 2011 to January 8, 2012. Museum visitors will be able to cast their vote for their favourite tree. Ottawa's LCC is participating again showcasing authentic Lithuanian straw ornaments. Special thanks to Nijole Gray and Rita Mankowski for decorating this year's tree.

 

Lenten Mass in March

Father Virginijus Veprauskas from Karmelava St. Anne's Church in Lithuania will be visiting Ottawa and celebrating a Lenten Mass on Sunday, March 13 at 5:30 p.m. at St. George's Church, 415 Piccadilly Ave. (Richmond Rd. closed to Island Park Drive). This may be one of the only times that Mass will be celebrated in Lithuanian this year so please make an effort to attend.
